BISP Starts New SOPRAN Project For Girls In 7 Districts

The 8171 BISP Program has started a new project called SOPRAN. It aims to improve the nutrition of teenage girls in Pakistan. The project helps girls deal with malnutrition and health issues. SOPRAN will give essential food supplements to support the growth and health of these girls. At first, it will focus on seven districts in Pakistan, with plans to expand nationwide if it succeeds. This project is a big step toward fighting malnutrition and helping girls take control of their health and their families’ well-being.

The SOPRAN Project was recently discussed in a meeting led by Naveed Akbar, Director General of BISP. The meeting talked about how social programs can help improve the nutrition of young girls. The project not only aims to improve health but also teaches girls to influence their communities by promoting better nutrition.

BISP Starts SOPRAN Project For Girls In 7 Districts

The SOPRAN project has support from several partners like GIZ, Nutrition International, CERP, and the provincial Departments of Education and Health. These groups help carry out and grow the project in different areas.

Why SOPRAN Matters for Girls’ Health

SOPRAN is crucial for teenage girls in Pakistan, many of whom suffer from malnutrition and anemia. More than half of the girls in Pakistan face these problems. The project gives them iron-folic acid supplements and fortified foods to fight these health issues. Director General Naveed Akbar stressed the need for collaboration between the health, education, and social protection sectors for the project’s success.

Districts Involved in SOPRAN

At first, the SOPRAN project will focus on seven districts:

  • Faisalabad
  • Swat
  • Shaheed Benazirabad
  • Quetta
  • Kotli
  • Skardu
  • Islamabad

In these areas, the project will encourage behavior changes, give fortified foods, and teach nutrition.

Working Together to Achieve SOPRAN’s Goals

Partners like Dr. Franz von Roenne of GIZ discussed SOPRAN’s goals. These include giving iron and folate supplements, fortifying wheat flour, and building the skills of local health, nutrition, and education teams. They also talked about adding these supplements to local food systems for long-term success. Naveed Akbar highlighted the need for continued cooperation at both district and provincial levels to ensure the project succeeds.

Conclusion

The SOPRAN project is a key effort by BISP to improve teenage girls’ nutrition in Pakistan. Providing food supplements and nutrition education fights malnutrition and helps girls become community leaders for change.
